Long Island Creek Site 1B - Water

Physical and Chemical Data

At each site visit, a series of tests, measurements, and collections were conducted using the Georgia Adopt-A-Stream format and set criteria.
First, the air temperature was measured using a standard thermometer. While that was being measured, the relative humidity was measured with the device shown below. One thermometer has a cloth on the bulb for a wet reading, and the other thermometer is exposed, for a dry reading. The two measurements were then registered and used to define the relative humidity.

The pH was tested by mixing a small amount of stream water with ten drops of the pH wide range indicator in a 5 mL test tube. Then the test tube was compared to the color scale indicator device to determine the pH level. Next, the water temperature was measured by placing the thermometer in a shady spot in the stream while the additional field work continued. Dissolved Oxygen was measured in parts per million (ppm) using a very carefully collected sample of water and a combination of chemical drops. Conductivity was measured using a device that is placed in the stream for a short time and measured in uS/cm. Water samples were collected and placed in ice for coliform testing later in the lab.
